Tucked away at the Ballast Point end of Bayshore Blvd is one of Tampa’s best kept secrets when it comes to good old, honest-to-goodness food joints. But those people who did discover it have absolutely loved it because they told their friends and kept coming back for more, and such has been this cult status that Chubby’s Super Subs & Pizza is now in its 28th year providing hearty eatin’ for those in-the-know.
Founded and still run by George and Zan Fuller, they took the best bits from the most popular eateries around the Boston Suburbs they grew up in and created Chubby’s as a Tampa gateway to the old-fashioned, hearty eatin’ of the northeast.
From the house specialty – the Steak Bomb Cheesesteak boasting thick steak, sautéed onions and mushrooms, green peppers and lashings of melted American cheese – to the handmade pizzas, pastas and subs, Chubby’s take great pride in everything on their menu. Accordingly, they make their pizza dough on site, the pasta and pizza sauces are recipes created freshly from scratch in-house, their bread is baked daily, and all their ingredients are bought at a local farmers market.
As you’d expect of such an unassuming place the prices are unassuming too; with virtually everything on the menu at well under $10. You won’t hurt your wallet and if you are worried that you’re hurting your waistline – and as the restaurant’s name implies, they do feed you good! – then fear not. Being situated on the end of Bayshore means you can enjoy a meandering stroll along the boulevard to burn off any excess calories when you’re done.
